Arsenal fans plead ‘we always believed in you’ as Havertz nets priceless winner

Arsenal fans pleaded "we always believed in you" after Kai Havertz netted the winner against Brentford.

The Gunners were locked in a stalemate against the Bees as it looked like Mikel Arteta's side would have to settle for a dismal draw away from home in the Premier League. His side had a goal ruled out by VAR for offside on the stroke of half time when Leandro Trossard thought he had broken the deadlock.

But just as Arsenal appeared set to lose out on the chance to go top of the table with ten minutes of normal time remaining, Arteta made the decision to bring on much-criticised £65million signing Havertz for Gabriel Martinelli. And the German made himself the hero in the 89th minute by nodding in a delightful in-swinging Bukayo Saka cross.

As the ball came in from the right, Havertz escaped his marker and – where Gabriel Jesus had failed in the first half – beat Mark Flekken with a downward header. It was the 24-year-old's long-awaited first goal from open play for the north Londoners since his move from Chelsea, having been given a sympathy penalty by his team-mates against Bournemouth earlier in the season.

And Arsenal fans on social media were delighted with Havertz's biggest contribution for the side yet – a priceless three points in their season title race.
