  • The midfielder hobbled off the pitch during Scotland’s 3-3 draw against Norway
  • Look how Villa rebounded from a 5-1 loss… they’re dangerous! It’s All Kicking Off

John McGinn has been assessed by Aston Villa medics with optimism growing he will be fit to face Tottenham on Sunday.

The Scotland midfielder hobbled off towards the end of his country’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Norway on Sunday and his absence would be a huge blow to Unai Emery’s men, as McGinn has been in outstanding form in recent matches.

But it is thought Villa are hopeful that McGinn will be able to play his part in north London, with only a point separating fourth-placed Spurs from Villa, who are fifth but have not won away in the league since their 1-0 triumph at Chelsea on September 24.

McGinn scored in Villa’s most recent fixture, a 3-1 win over Fulham on November 12, and is playing some of the best football of his career. He was made captain by Steven Gerrard and kept the job when Emery replaced the former Liverpool skipper in November 2022.

Emery said: ‘He is very demanding with himself. He is competitive and always ready to play, both mentally and physically.

‘When he is not training or playing he is resting – that must be the case but his energy levels are always high. He is consistent and tries to be a very good example for the other players.

‘I really how he is as a person and he is a fantastic professional too. Because he was here when the club were in the Championship, he has been committed to Aston Villa for a long time and has a strong connection with the fans and the project here.’

The Scotland star has been in excellent form for Villa this season and has scored five goals in 19 games across all competitions
