‘This is unacceptable’ – Alexia Putellas after Luis Rubiales refuses to resign
The BBC have issued a brief statement after mistakenly confusing suspended Spanish FA chief Luis Rubiales for Manchester City legend Pablo Zabaleta. Footage of Zabaleta was used during a news broadcast on Monday night, which addressed the fallout from Rubiales’ actions following Spain’s win at the Women’s World Cup.
Rubiales is the subject of widespread calls to resign as president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). The 46-year-old planted a kiss on the lips of Jenni Hermoso, which the midfielder claims was not consensual, after Spain’s win over England in the World Cup final.
FIFA have suspended Rubiales for 90 days after he refused to step down during a heated press conference last week. The Spaniard’s mother has responded by locking herself in a church and declaring a hunger strike until the ‘witch-hunt’ ends.
BBC News covered the scandal on Monday evening, although alongside snippets of Rubiales, footage of Zabaleta was mistakenly included in the broadcast.

On the issue, a BBC spokesperson said: “A production error meant we showed the wrong image in an earlier broadcast. This has now been rectified.”
Comedian and TV personality Omid Djalili was one of the first viewers to flag the incident on social media, writing: “Dear BBC News, you have mistakenly added footage of ex-Man City full-back Pablo Zabaleta in your piece about Rubiales tonight. You need to make a correction immediately.”

Zabaleta spent nine years on City’s books after signing from Espanyol in 2008. Despite joining before the club’s lucrative takeover, the right-back played a crucial role in two Premier League title wins, two Carabao Cups and an FA Cup triumph before leaving for West Ham in 2017.
Pressure is mounting on Rubiales to step down from his role as RFEF chief, with regional football leaders in Spain calling on the former defender to resign.
“After recent events and the unacceptable behaviour that has seriously damaged the image of Spanish football, the presidents request that Luis Rubiales resign immediately as president of the RFEF,” read an official statement.
The presidents also showed their unanimous support to stand-in RFEF chief Pedro Rocha. Earlier this week, hundreds of people gathered in central Madrid to protest against Rubiales and show support for Hermoso.
