Bruno Fernandes admits he is 'HAPPY' at Man United despite Saudi links

Bruno Fernandes insists he is ‘HAPPY’ at Manchester United despite Saudi Arabia rumours, but admits Erik ten Hag’s side didn’t start the season ‘the way we wanted’

Bruno Fernandes dispelled suggestions linking him with a career move to Saudi Arabia after explaining he was ‘happy’ at Manchester United despite the club’s difficult run of form.

The Portuguese was handed the United captaincy in the summer after Erik ten Hag stripped Harry Maguire of the armband in favour of handing it to Fernandes.

However, his time as skipper so far hasn’t gone to plan with the club struggling in both the English top-flight and the Champions League, while already having been eliminated from the Carabao Cup, a title they won last season.

United recovered some confidence with a narrow 1-0 victory over Luton in the final Premier League game before the international break, but players have been linked with exits amid the incoming of new investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Fernandes has been one of United’s best signings in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era at Old Trafford since joining three-years ago during which time he has become a leader at the club.

His existing contract with United runs until 2026 with the option of a further year, but that hasn’t stopped the mega rich sides of Saudi Arabia from trying to recruit the playmaker.

The 29-year-old has since revealed he has no immediate plans to leave Manchester but did explain United ‘didn’t start the way we wanted’ this season.

‘I’m focusing on the national team and United. I’m happy where I am,’ Fernandes told Sport TV Portugal.

‘In the national team, we had some very good times, at Manchester United we didn’t start the way we wanted. I don’t look at rumours. I don’t pay attention to them.

‘Today, it’s very easy to spread rumours in the press. I prefer to concentrate on my goals,’ he added.

Fernandes hasn’t been exempt from criticism at club level this season with his performances and leadership coming under intense scrutiny amidst United’s struggles.

Former players have cast doubt on his captaincy capabilities with ex-United captain Roy Keane furiously slating Fernandes after a poor performance and calling for him to be stripped of the club armband.

There have also been problems in finding a suitable midfield to accommodate Fernandes’ attacking prowess, with Ten Hag as yet unable to find balance in the middle of the pitch.

The Portuguese has at times been forced to play on the right-wing to give Mason Mount and Christian Eriksen more central roles and Fernandes will be hoping the international break has given Ten Hag time to find a solution to United’s midfield crisis.
