Cesc Fabregas lands first senior managerial job after coaching youth football

Premier League legend Cesc Fabregas has returned to first-team football and is poised to make his senior coaching debut.

That's after the World Cup-winner was announced as new interim manager of Serie B outfit Como following the sacking of Moreno Longo. Former Torino and Frosinone boss Longo was sacked by the second-tier outfit despite beating Ascoli on Saturday, with Como currently sat sixth in Serie B.

Fabregas, 36, hung up his boots at Como in July 2023 after playing one final season for the Lombardy-based club. He's been promoted to head coach on temporary terms after impressing with the 'B' team and youth set-up.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder will make his senior coaching debut at home to FeralpiSalo after the international break. Fabregas will have a chance to get used to his new responsibilities over the next fortnight, though many among the squad will be familiar already.

Two-time European champion Fabregas has spoken of his passion for coaching and said it's a dream of his to one day manage in the Premier League. He spent his playing career working under some of football's most famed tacticians, including Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola.

"Since I've started coaching, from day one, the fire is back," he told Sky Sports after making his move to the touchline. "Something has been brought back inside me from my early days that I had lost. Something I haven't felt for some time."

It's under his management that Como is looking to end a 21-year absence from Serie A by earning promotion come the end of this season. The Voltiani were last a part of Italy's top flight in 2003, though they'll do so with Fabregas in charge (for now) knowing he has bigger visions in sight.

"The Premier League is the objective; it is the biggest dream a coach can have," added Fabregas. "But let's keep improving. Have I got it in me? Time will tell. I believe so much in my methodology, and every day you learn so much. Expectations are there, but it is what you do and how you manage those expectations."

The ex-Barcelona playmaker was accustomed to playing consistently among football's elite throughout his playing career. But Fabregas will attempt to make the climb from a lower rung as he prepares to begin his second career at Como.
