Champions League punter denied big win after ‘sickening’ 95th minute keeper goal

A Champions League punter was denied a huge accumulator win by a 95th minute goalkeeper goal.

Streamer and well-known X [formerly known as Twitter) user Rory Talks Football took to the site to share his gut-wrenching failed bet. He had put down a meagre £10 in the hope of winning big on the opening Champions League night of the season.

All eight of his bets were on the verge of coming through, understandably leading him to become excited at the prospect of landing £977. But that was brought to a crashing halt as Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel scored a header to earn a 1-1 draw at home against Atletico Madrid.

The stunning moment came after the Rome-based side had initially fallen behind in the first half of their Group E game on Tuesday evening. Pablo Barrios found the net for Diego Simeone’s side, but a late free-kick saw Provedel join the attack and spark wild scenes as he powered his header past Jan Oblak.

Sharing a screenshot of his acca, Rory wrote: “This was the most sickening moment in my gambling career All 8 results correct, £10 for £977 And a 95th minute GK goal to kill it.”

He had successfully predicted a draw between AC Milan and Newcastle, as well as wins for RB Leipzig, Feyenoord, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, Porto and Manchester City on the night. Yet he was let down as Atletico missed out on a win in the dying seconds.

The failed accumulator went viral, receiving over 800,000 views and thousands of more engagements. Other football fans raced to voice their sympathy after what would have been a hefty midweek pay-out.

One Twitter user wrote: “I feel ur pain,” while another tweeted: “You really hate to see it man, condolences.”

A third added: “As much as I want to laugh I feel bad for you… gutting,” and a fourth wrote: “Sickening. Happens to me almost every other week.”

Provedel became the fourth keeper to find the net in the Champions League’s long history. Jorg Butt stunningly scored from the spot for three German teams – Hamburg, Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich, all against Juventus – while Vincent Enyeama once scored a penalty for French outfit Olympique Lyonnais.

Sinan Bolat is the only other goalkeeper to have scored from open play, when his header helped Dutch side AZ Alkmaar secure a 1-1 draw with Belgium's Standard Liege.
