Chelsea ace Thiago Silva wary of ‘controversy’ as he speaks out on next transfer

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva is remaining tight-lipped over his future beyond this season. The Brazilian has refused to comment on a potential return to Fluminense, the club he spent three years at earlier in his career.

Silva has been a reliable figure in a hugely turbulent spell for Chelsea. He has started every Premier League match so far this season, one of five outfielders to have done so in the Blues squad.

But at the age of 39, it is realistic to think this will be his final season at Stamford Bridge. His contract expires next summer and a return to Fluminense could be on the cards.

He made 82 appearances for them before moving to Europe to sign for AC Milan in 2009. Silva admits the rumours won’t go away but says he cannot comment for the time being to prevent potential “controversy”.

He told Globo’s Esporte Espetacular of Fluminense: “This relationship has been going on for a long time, right. But I prefer to remain silent at this moment, as there has already been some controversy in the recent past.

“I now have a family, I have children. So we have to think about this aspect too. It’s about seeing where things can bring us happiness, to finish this beautiful and successful career that I believe I have achieved.”

Chelsea signed Silva on a free transfer following his exit from Paris Saint-Germain in 2020. He helped the Blues win the Champions League for a second time in his first season at the club, although limped off in the first half of the final due to injury.

Mauricio Pochettino followed the same path as Silva this summer by joining Chelsea after leaving PSG, though their paths did not cross at the French club. The Argentine was expected by some to appoint Silva as his captain following the departure of Cesar Azpilicueta.

The privilege was instead handed to Reece James and Pochettino explained his reasoning. He said: “For different reasons and circumstances, I am looking at not only the present but the future.

“It was a great opportunity, because he is ready, for Reece to be the captain. When the player is clever like Thiago, who is 38 and nearly 39. Do you think he is thinking about needing the armband? He is a captain as well like Reece and [Ben] Chilwell.

“You don’t need the armband on your arm to feel captain. He is captain also. He is going to help Chilwell and Reece to be great captains for the club.”
