Chelsea fans fume as captain sent off again with Conor Gallagher red vs Brighton

Chelsea saw their captain sent off for a second consecutive game after Conor Gallagher was sent off in their Premier League clash against Brighton.

Gallagher, 23, wore the captain's armband in Sunday's (December 3) clash due to the suspension of Reece James who was sent off in Chelsea's 4-1 defeat at Newcastle last week. The England international followed in the footsteps of the right-back but certainly not in the way fans wanted.

With Chelsea 2-0 up thanks to goals from Enzo Fernandez and Levi Colwill, Brighton's Facundo Buonanotte halved the deficit with a fine strike past Robert Sanchez just minutes before half-time.

Just moments after the away side's goal, Gallagher chopped down ex-Chelsea ace Billy Gilmour with a crunching tackle from behind. Having received a yellow card earlier in the game, referee Craig Pawson didn't hesitate in handing the 23-year-old a second yellow of the game.

Gallagher attempted to plead his innocence but to no avail as his sending off spells a second consecutive one for Chelsea following Reece James' dismissal in their 4-1 hammering away to Newcastle last week.

Fans certainly displayed their anger on social media with one fan suggesting Gallagher and James both being dropped for their poor discipline. They wrote: "Sick of watching these children trying to manage a game. James last week, Gallagher this week, I would drop both of them until xmas".

Another fan commented: "Chelsea's bad luck is on steroids," while a third fan saw the positive side of the Englishman's sending off as they said: "We’re freed from Gallagher next match".

While James, 23, will return for Chelsea's trip away to Manchester United next week, they'll be without Gallagher in what will be a blow considering he's started every Premier League game this season. It's only his second red card in his Chelsea career, with his first coming in his second ever start for the club back in August 2022.
