Chris Sutton has questioned why Newcastle defender Dan Burn has not received a call-up to the England squad.
Burn scored in Newcastle’s incredible 4-1 thumping of Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night, in the Magpies’ first Champions League game at St James’ Park in two decades.
The 31-year-old has been in exceptional form for Newcastle going back to last season, where he helped them qualify for Europe’s most prestigious competition via a top-four finish.
Despite this, he still hasn’t received a call-up by England manager Gareth Southgate, as he again failed to make the Three Lions squad for their upcoming games with Australia and Italy.
When speaking about Newcastle’s victory over the Ligue 1 champions, Sutton reserved special praise for Burn, asking Mail Sport’s Ian Ladyman on It’s All Coming Up to name a better English left-back at present.

Sutton argued the case that there is ‘no better English left-back than Burn’ at present
He said: ‘Why does Dan Burn not get an England call up? I do not understand that.
‘Tell me a better English left back than Dan Burn right now. Go on, name one. Hello? Come on?’
Ladyman in response named several players who could be seen as better than Burn.
He replied: ‘Well, Ben Chilwell is but he’s injured. Luke Shaw is but he’s injured.
‘Kieran Trippier is probably is a better left back than Dan Burn. He plays right-back for Newcastle but no I can. That is a better left-back.
‘Just because he plays it right-back. If he played it left-back, he’d be better. I like your sentiment.’

Sutton refuted Ladyman’s claims as he hit back: ‘He plays right-back. I don’t know whether you watch Newcastle. So you can’t name a better left-back than Dan Burn. You’re trying to.’
Ladyman said Burn had a ‘great story’ after going from working at Asda to playing in the Champions League, but continued to deny Sutton’s claims that he is suitable for England’s left-back role.
He said: ‘The Dan Burn’s story is a great story. You know, he was working in the supermarket at one point when he thought his football career was over.
‘A brilliant story. He’s a lovely lad. He scored a goal last night. Magnificent. I don’t think he’s an England left-back, Chris. I don’t think he’s an England left-back.’
