David de Gea’s two-word message highlights Man Utd feelings after brutal axe

Man Utd’s five worst decisions since Erik ten Hag took over

David de Gea still appears to have a soft spot for Manchester United despite being shown the door by Erik ten Hag over the summer. The Spaniard was United’s longest-serving player before he left the club at the end of last season after failing to agree a new contract.

De Gea is yet to find a new club despite being linked with teams in Saudi Arabia and Spain and it remains to be seen when he will eventually return to football, with the 32-year-old still eager to keep playing for a number of years. He has been based in Madrid since leaving United but returned to the UK on Monday to sort out the house in Hale where he lived.

It seems clear that De Gea’s love for United has not been tarnished by the manner of his exit, given that he was in attendance to watch the women’s team in action on Tuesday night. The Red Devils drew with Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Women’s Champions League qualifier as they look to reach the group stages of the competition for the very first time.

De Gea was spotted with a smile on his face in the stands as he took in the match, while he also posted a video clip on Instagram alongside the caption “Let’s go!!!” to show his support for the team. It showed that United still have a place in his thoughts despite the bitterness of his departure only a few months ago, with De Gea showing no hesitation to wish them well in his absence.

Ten Hag decided to let De Gea go after losing confidence in his ability to play out from the back, according to ESPN, before signing Andre Onana to replace him over the summer. The situation appeared to turn sour at times, with De Gea sharing a number of cryptic social media posts on X prior to his exit being confirmed.

He announced the news himself in a heartfelt message to United’s supporters, which read: “I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love from the last 12 years. We’ve achieved a lot since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club.

“I took incredible pride every time I pulled on this shirt. To lead the team, to represent this institution, the biggest club in the world, was an honour only bestowed upon a few lucky footballers. Now it’s the right time to undertake a new challenge, to push myself again in new surroundings.”

Things have not worked out for De Gea in terms of finding a new club, though, with the United veteran still a free agent as things stand. He is believed to be maintaining his fitness in case something crops up but there have been suggestions that he could retire if he fails to receive an offer from a club willing to make him their first-choice goalkeeper.
