England are waiting on a firm decision from Elliot Anderson over his international loyalties. Anderson, who has made seven appearances for Newcastle this season, drew praise for his display during Sunday’s 8-0 drubbing at Sheffield United.

Scotland called him up for a European Championship qualifier against Cyprus and the friendly defeat by England, but the midfielder, 20, withdrew from the squad. An appearance against Cyprus would have cemented Whitley Bay-born Anderson’s allegiance to Scotland, as he has represented them at four different age groups.

English FA bosses had been under the impression that Anderson, who briefly turned out for England’s Under 19s two years ago, would commit his future to Scotland, a country he qualifies for through his grandmother.

But Anderson revealed that no decision had been made following his withdrawal, which re-opened the door for further talks.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United are facing an FA fine for missiles thrown from the stands at Newcastle players after Sven Botman scored the third on Sunday afternoon. Anderson was struck on the foot by a bottle
