Even world’s richest tennis star couldn’t afford Glazers’ Man Utd asking price

Billionaires around the world have been priced out of bidding for Manchester United by their greedy owners – and even tennis star Jessica Pegula doesn't have enough cash.

The 29-year-old, who will take on Maddison Keys in the last 16 of the singles draw at the US Open on Monday, has made £8million during her career but is in line to pocket an astronomical amount more through her family.

That still wouldn't be enough to buy United after the Glazers boosted their asking price to over £8billion, which would make it the richest sporting franchise on the planet.

As well as her ability on the court, Pegula is known as the richest tennis player across both the WTA and ATP circuits as the heir to billions.

Pegula's parents Terry, 72, and Kim, 54, are the co-owners of both NFL side Buffalo Bills and NHL outfit Buffalo Sabres – with an estimated net worth of £5.4billion according to the latest Forbes figures.

Pegula said back in 2020: "I know I was more privileged than other people. I'm aware of that. I try to be very down-to-earth, and I think I am."

She is also into the last 16 of the doubles and quarter-finals of the mixed doubles as she looks for a first Grand Slam triumph across any draw.

In reaction to the Glazers' new stance on not selling up, Gary Neville was left seething.

Neville said on Sky Sports: "It's just a game for them. They play, they think it's a toy. They are, of course, they're gonna sell, they're desperate for money. They can't even compete on FFP anymore. Manchester United talking like they're a mid table club when it comes to a transfer market."
