Fans have jokingly called for Everton to be 'automatically relegated' after the Toffees fell 2-0 down at home to lowly Luton.

Things have been looking up in the blue half of Merseyside following a fine win at Brentford last weekend and progress at the expense of Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup in midweek. As a result, the Goodison faithful will have been hoping for another strong result against the newly-promoted Hatters, who had just one point going into the game.

However, shambolic first-half defending from Sean Dyche’s side was taken advantage of by Luton. First, Tom Lockyer buddled the ball home from close range on 24 minutes.

Carlton Morris was then given the freedom of Goodison to turn home a free-kick just past the half-hour mark. Everton did pull a goal back before half-time through Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but manner of the goals conceded left fans howling.

One demanded: “This should be an automatic relegation. How are you 2-0 down at home to LUTON?” Another warned: “Everton might get relegated this season.”

An Everton fan, rather harshly, said: “Luton shouldn’t be in the Premier League. Not sure what that says about Everton.”

One fed-up Toffees supporter declared: “Luton are not Premier League side, fact. They’re very poor but yet they’re coming to us and showing us who deserve to be in the league. They probably won't get another win all season, just against us. Why do we always do it, I'm f****** fuming. We beat Brentford and Villa away.”

Another moaned: “We're incapable of putting consistent performances week in week, out and it's infuriating. We smashed Brentford and Villa, why are we struggling against Luton. Blame the manager for his tactics here tbh.”

Luton held on to their lead to register their first victory of the season.
