Everton ‘would be fighting for Europe’ without point deduction after Burnley win

Fans were shocked that Everton would be "fighting for Europe" without their 10-point deduction after beating Burnley 2-0.

The Toffees recorded their fourth successive victory – and clean sheet – away at Turf Moor on Saturday (December 16) evening, climbing to 16th in the table and seven points clear of the Premier League relegation zone.

It could have been a very different story had they not been docked 10 points last month for their profit and sustainability rules breach. They'd currently sit eighth in the table, just a win away from Newcastle in sixth.

One rival supporter commented: "In an alternate reality, Everton are currently fighting for Europe lol." A second echoed: "Everton should be eighth fighting for Europe. Dyche manager of the year."

A third wrote: "Everton would be in the race for Europe now had they not got that 10 points deduction. Sean Dyche… I wasn't familiar with your managerial nous. Apologies."

"Give us our points back and we'll do you proud in Europe next season," joked one Everton supporter. While another argued: "This manager will build us up to challenge for Europe. We have to do it the right way. Slow steady and we'll get there."

Those sentiments were shared by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp, who similarly hailed the job Dyche is doing on the blue side of Merseyside.

"If they hadn't had the 10 point deduction we'd probably be talking about them pushing for Europe, that's how well they're playing," said Redknapp post-match.

"They're so well organised, they know what they're doing. They're in a fantastic position right now. The manager, the players. And they're playing with a great energy. You can see the belief in everything they're doing right now."
