Ex-Man Utd trio join forces at Macclesfield as club legend’s son gets first role

Macclesfield Football Club have welcomed three faces very familiar to Manchester United fans in a new-look coaching group.

Alex Bruce, a former United prospect and son of club icon Steve Bruce, has taken charge as first-team manager and been joined by Premier League veteran Phil Bardsley as his assistant boss.

They have also been joined by Paul McGuinness as head coach after he spent 23 years as United's academy manager, with Dan Ternent taking on the role of head of recruitment.

The Phoenix club of Macclesfield Town FC, who were wound up in 2020, have cited the wealth of experience of the new group who will work under director of football Robbie Savage.

Bruce was on the books at United between 1998 and 2001 before making over 305 senior appearances and ending his career at Macclesfield.

Bardsley, who famously KOd Wayne Rooney in his own kitchen, made 18 appearances for the club as a youngster but is best known for his spells with Sunderland and Burnley in the Premier League.

Savage said: "Looking at Alex, Paul, and Phil and with my upbringing, the key values of coming through the system at Manchester United is a fundamental part of why we made these appointments.

"The ethos and the morals and the principles which we want to integrate into the football club are vital going forward. Alex with his coaching experience at West Brom dealing with first-team players and his ability to handle a squad.

“This is an amazing opportunity for Alex who has got all his badges, assisted by Phil Bardsley who recently finished playing in The Premier League at Burnley. His Premier League experience and willingness to improve players and be a part of the journey."

Macclesfield have won back-to-back promotions following their founding back in 2020, currently sitting seventh in the Northern Premier League after six wins from 13 matches.

The club play at the Leasing.com Stadium, the former home Macclesfield Town – who were founded in 1874.

Local businessman Robert Smethurst purchased the assets of the club to establish Macclesfield FC, swiftly appointing Savage.
