Former Newcastle United captain Fabricio Coloccini once broke two bones in his back performing a bicycle kick.
Elite footballers are often seen as the pinnacle of athletic ability. Your Cristiano Ronaldos and your Zlatan Ibrahimovics have left fans gawking by leaping in the air and acrobatically performing overhead kicks in the past.
And Manchester United teenager Alejandro Garnacho became the latest player to score from his marvellous attempt against Everton on Sunday. But not everyone can successfully pull it off.

Just ask retired ex-Magpies defender Coloccini, who missed seven weeks of action after attempting one back in February 2013. The cultured centre-back had been pressured by Southampton’s Rickie Lambert by the corner flag with the sides level at 1-1.
But instead of looking to win a throw-in by knocking the ball against his opponent, Coloccini opted to give the fans their money’s worth. He proceeded to complete three kick-ups while shielding the ball, before performing an erratic bicycle kick.

While he managed to get the ball away, it came at a huge cost as Coloccini landed awkwardly, injured himself and was forced to miss much of the remaining 2012/13 season. And he was immediately sent packing to his native Argentina for a week of treatment with his national association’s medical team.
“Colo has gone back to Argentina. There's no treatment he can have – he's broken two of the bones in his back,” a bemused Alan Pardew said at the time.
Luckily, the curly haired defender recovered and went on to play three more seasons at St. James’ Park. He made a total of 274 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals and cementing his place as a legend.
He hung up his boots aged 39 in 2021 after stints at San Lorenzo and Aldosivi in his homeland. Coloccini was also capped 39 times for Argentina between 2003 and 2014.
