Famous Anfield atmosphere even surprised Liverpool star during Merseyside derby

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has revealed the Merseyside derby atmosphere caught him by surprise.

Following his summer move from RB Leipzig, the Hungarian ace has quickly become a Liverpool favourite, hitting the ground running since his arrival at Anfield. On Saturday, the 22-year-old got his first taste of the Merseyside derby, as Jurgen Klopp's side ran out 2-0 winners over the Toffees in what was a contentious affair.

On 37 minutes, Everton defender Ashley Young was sent off for a second yellow card by referee Craig Pawson. Down to 10-men, Sean Dyche's side shored up their defences, repelling wave after wave of Liverpool attack in the second half.

However, Everton supporters were left incensed when Pawson refused to give Reds defender Ibrahima Konate a second yellow card for a challenge on Beto, which looked to be a clear booking. And after the incident, Liverpool went on to win the game thanks to a Mo Salah brace, with the Egyptian forward scoring a penalty on 75 minutes, and adding another in injury-time.

The win over Everton means Liverpool went top of the table joint on points with Arsenal and Tottenham prior to Manchester City's clash against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Etihad. And speaking to TNT Sports after the derby win, Szoboszlai revealed he had not anticipated just how good the atmosphere for the Everton game would be at Anfield.

"It feels really good, playing at Anfield is something special and playing against Everton is a derby. It feels nice," Szoboszlai told TNT Sports.

"I expected it would be a good atmosphere but not that loud. I have played in a lot of stadiums but this is one of the best. Trent was one of the players who spoke about the atmosphere – I asked how it will be. All the staff said it would be really good.

"I know how it feels to play with 10 men and know how Everton felt, but we had to be focused. It is the perfect start to the weekend."
