Fans have mocked Manchester United star Scott McTominay for playing “hide and seek” in the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle on Saturday.
United suffered their sixth loss of the season already on their visit to St. James’ Park, with Anthony Gordon grabbing the only goal of the game 55 minutes in. Erik ten Hag’s side were run ragged all evening, only managing 42% possession while facing 22 shots.
Red Devils fans have pointed the finger at central midfielder McTominay, 26, for their lack of stability and control. McTominay, who played the full 90 minutes, only managed 17 touches in the first half.

That was 12 fewer than United goalkeeper Andre Onana despite his central position, prompting the Scotland international to be slammed by the United faithful on social media for his "ghost" performance.
One X user wrote: “He's in midfield playing hide and seek LMAOOOOOOOO,” while another replied: “He hides from the ball.”

A third tweeted: “Midfielder who does nothing in the midfield,” while a fourth added: “Not even good teams can afford to carry passengers in games nowadays. Meanwhile we're carrying a passenger and we're not even good.”
And others chimed in by writing: “He’s so bad I can’t get my head around it,” and: “A goal every 5 games isn’t worth this.”
McTominay has played 11 Premier League matches so far this season and four more in the Champions League. He is currently on course for his best goal-scoring season to date, with his three in the league being just one goal shy of his previous best, which came in 2020/21 and 2019/20.
For Scotland, the midfielder has netted a highly impressive seven goals in 10 matches this year. Yet doubts still remain over his all-round ability as a midfielder when it comes to passing, vision and controlling the tempo of matches, as required in a successful Ten Hag team.
