A football fan missed on collecting a £9,500 payout after Luis Diaz's goal was wrongly disallowed against Tottenham in Liverpool's 2-1 defeat.
Liverpool fans were left scratching their head over the devastating defeat on Saturday (September 30) that was chockful of controversial decisions including disallowing Diaz's first half strike for offside. The away side suffered two red cards during the game and despite hanging on to a 1-1 score-line for much of the second half, they succumbed in the dying embers of the game as Joel Matip's own goal secured the three points for Spurs.
Following the game, the PGMOL released a statement admitting Diaz's goal should have stood but "significant human error" had taken place and "VAR failed to intervene". The statement read: "PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool. The goal by Luis Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials.

This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene. The admission does little to quell the anger of the Liverpool squad and fans as well as one football supporter who narrowly missed out on a windfall due to the controversial incident.
A fan named Ryan Hall on X, took to the social media platform and wrote: "Surely someone needs to pay me out for this!?" as he posted a photo of a £10 bet he had placed which was going to pay him £9,500 if the Colombian winger netted during the match. Given the PGMOL's admission that it should have been a goal, football fans urged the unfortunate punter to go to court in order to claim his rightful winnings.

One user wrote: "Take this to court and you get paid, hire a good lawyer" while another commented: "Someone pay this man! Shocking decision I said straight away it's inside how can VAR not tell and I can with the naked eye". A third person said how they'd feel if they were in his shoes as they said: "I’d be fuming me lad. Straight in for a court case, give me my money".
Following the controversy, changes have already made in the next two Premier League fixtures as Darren England and Dan Cook, who were on VAR duties during the Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool fixture, have been replaced for upcoming matches.
The two were scheduled to oversee Nottingham Forest v Brentford on Sunday (October 1) and Fulham v Chelsea on Monday (October 2).
