Iconic England forward Gary Lineker led the tributes to Terry Venables, after the former Three Lions and Barcelona manager passed away at the age of 80 years old.

Lineker was a key player for Venables at the La Liga giants, Tottenham Hotspur and England. Venables is considered to be one of England's finest ever managers after reaching the semi-finals of the 1996 European Championship, which saw the Three Lions painfully lose on penalties to Germany.

Nearly 30 years on from the heartbreak at the old Wembley, Lineker, 62, was one of the first players who worked with Venables to express their sadness at his passing.

He took to X and wrote: "Devastated to hear that Terry Venables has died. The best, most innovative coach that I had the privilege and pleasure of playing for.

"He was much more, though, than just a great manager, he was vibrant, he was charming, he was witty, he was a friend. He’ll be hugely missed. Sending love and condolences to Yvette and the family. RIP Terry."

Alan Shearer, another player who played some of his best football under Venables, also expressed his condolences on the social media platform. The Newcastle legend had been enduring a barren goal-scoring spell which saw him fail to hit the back of the net for nearly two years, until the ex-Tottenham boss was named England boss.

Shearer tweeted: "Extremely sad news the great Terry Venables has passed away. RIP Boss. I owe you so much. You were amazing."

As well as being a fine player for the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham and Crystal Palace, Venables career in management is what he is best known for. In his first season for Barcelona, after joining the club from Queens Park Rangers, he ended Barcelona's 10 year spell without a league title by winning La Liga in 1985.

After three season at the Nou Camp, he spent four years as manager of Tottenham, before taking up the reins at England in 1994. After guiding the Three Lions to the Euro 96 semi-finals, he resigned and became manager of Australia, before eventually going on to work with Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough as assistant manager and Leeds United.
