Guardiola says £45m flop Kalvin Phillips ‘struggles’ with Man City playing style

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has admitted transfer flop Kalvin Phillips 'struggles' with their style of play.

Phillips had been thrust into the limelight in recent days, after Rodri was given his marching orders against Nottingham Forest. The Yorkshireman swapped Leeds United for City last summer for £45million – but he has struggled to replicate his Leeds form.

And speaking ahead of City's Carabao Cup clash with Newcastle, he said: "Marcelo [Bielsa] gave Kalvin the best of Kalvin in his career," said Guardiola.

"I'd love to have done with Kalvin what Marcelo has done to him. We have our own specific way to play and [he] sometimes struggles in a few things, while the previous [Leeds playing style] was perfect [for him]."

Phillips played the best football of his career under Bielsa, and under El Loco he was the main man in a team that finished 9th in the Premier League. And the midfielder also excelled on the international stage, where he was named England's Player of the Year in 2021.

Guardiola also revealed Phillips had the chance to leave City over the summer, but he turned down the opportunity: "The club spoke with him because he did not have many minutes. He said 'no, I want to stay'.

"We brought Kalvin here for his quality. He is open minded, always wants to learn and wants to help. This is what we want to try to do."
