Harry Kane embarrassed on dark day for Bayern as hunt for silverware hits snag

Kane explains decision to join Bayern over Premier League interest

Harry Kane and his Bayern Munich team-mates suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat on Saturday afternoon as Eintracht Frankfurt ran riot over Thomas Tuchel’s side. The striker ditched Tottenham for a move to Germany this summer to increase his chances of banking trophies, but Bayern are under pressure in the hunt for another Bundesliga title.

The Bavarian giants have topped the league at the end of every season since 2011/12 – a streak of 11 titles on the trot. That will undoubtedly have featured in Kane’s thinking when he cut ties with Spurs back in August to go in search of trophies.

However, Bayern face stiff competition this term in Bayer Leverkusen, who are top of the table and unbeaten after 13 games. Xabi Alonso’s side also boast a three-point advantage, and that could extend to six points if they win a crunch meeting with Stuttgart on Sunday.

Bayern’s quest to keep pace with Leverkusen was dealt an agonising blow at Frankfurt’s Deutsche Bank Park, where the hosts rattled in no fewer than five goals to leave Kane and co licking their wounds.

First-half goals from Omar Marmoush, Eric Junior Dina Ebimbe and Hugo Larsson put Frankfurt in control on home turf, before a goal from Bayern star Joshua Kimmich just before half-time gave the visitors hope.

It didn’t last long, though, as Eintracht’s onslaught continued after the break, with another strike from Ebimbe and one final goal from Ansgar Knauff to rub salt in the wounds and rubber-stamp an emphatic 5-1 scoreline.

For all his individual accolades, Kane has never won a major trophy at club or international level. Theories began to emerge that the former Tottenham captain may be cursed when he lost on his Bayern debut against RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup final.

Another avenue to a breakthrough piece of silverware was closed back in November, when his new club lost in the DFB Pokal to third-tier side Saarbrucken. That being said, Kane’s individual form has been sparkling since joining up with Tuchel.
