Norwich City striker Hwang Ui-jo has been banished indefinitely from South Korea’s national team following an allegation he illegally filmed a sexual encounter with an ex-girlfriend.
Hwang, who denies the allegation against him, is not being considered for selection by his national team pending a police inquiry into the claim.
The suspension comes just seven weeks before the start of the Asian Cup, but the Korea Football Association (KFA) feel it is not appropriate to select him amid a live investigation.
‘We have decided not to select Hwang Ui-jo for the national team until a clear conclusion is reached on the facts,’ a statement from the KFA’s ethics committee read.
Hwang, 31, is still eligible to play for Norwich and he scored for the Canaries in their 3-2 loss to Watford on Tuesday.

Lee Youn-nam, who heads the KFA’s ethics committee, told reporters that national players must conduct themselves ‘with a high degree of morality and responsibility’.
‘Considering the fact that the player is being investigated as a suspect, it is difficult for him to carry out normal national team activities,’ Lee said.
‘Football fans have high expectations for the national team, (so) we have deemed it inappropriate to select Hwang Ui-jo for the national team.’
South Korea head coach Jurgen Klinsmann added: ‘I fully understand the current situation and will respect the decision of the Korea Football Association.’
Hwang denies allegation against him but he is not being considered by his country currently
Hwang, who has continually denied the allegation against him, is on a season-long loan at Norwich from Nottingham Forest.
The forward joined Forest in the summer of 2022 from Bordeaux but he has yet to make an appearance for Steve Cooper’s first team.
He had loan spells at Olympiacos in Greece and back in South Korea with FC Seoul last season.
Since heading to Norwich in this past summer he has scored three goals in 14 appearances.
