‘I broke Ivanovic’s heart about Champions League final – it was Chelsea’s fault’

Geoff Shreeves recounted the worst interview he's ever been a part of – but blamed Chelsea for the awkwardness with poor Branislav Ivanovic.

The reporter, who left Sky Sports at the end of last season after 31 years, announced he'd been joining CBS Sports as he made his first appearance on the broadcast this past Saturday (October 21). The 59-year-old was asked by analyst Nico Cantor on what his most awkward interview was and without hesitation, Shreeves began speaking about the interview he conducted with Chelsea legend Ivanovic in 2012.

The Premier League giants had beaten Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate to make it through to the Champions League final. As he began speaking to the Russian defender, he told him that the yellow card he received in the 2-2 draw meant he'd be unable to play in the final against Bayern Munich. Ivanovic, however looked confused despite Shreeves confirming he'd miss the biggest game of his career.

Shreeves said it was Chelsea's wrongdoing for the awkward moment as in a later interview, Ivanovic said Chelsea staff didn't warn players who were already on a yellow from the first leg not to booked in the second leg as they'd miss out on the final. The club ended up being without the full-back as well as Ramires, Raul Meireles and captain John Terry who were all suspended.

Speaking with The Times, Ivanovic said: "Honestly, I was in shock about the whole situation. Our coaching staff and Roberto Di Matteo [the manager] did not tell us before the game who was in the danger zone. When I got booked, after the game I was only thinking about the final.

"When Geoff surprised me, I wasn't even thinking in my head about the final, I was celebrating the semi-final and a big victory. I looked strange in that moment. Even when I got into the dressing room I was celebrating and happy.

"I realised probably on the bus when I calmed down and found out. I looked on my phone and I found I couldn't play in the final. But I don't have any problem with Geoff, I spoke with him and it was all right, I was fine."

The interview with Shreeves remains an infamous moment in English football but luckily for the three-time Premier League winner, the West London club won the final on penalties after drawing 1-1 in extra time.
