Israeli Europa League team play at stadium where Ronaldo broke 37-year record

Maccabi Haifa will take on Rennes in the Europa League in the same stadium Cristiano Ronaldo made history during Portgual's Euro 2020 campaign.

The reigning Israeli Premier League champions are not allowed to play in their home country due to the conflict between Israel and Hamas therefore they've been scheduled to take on the Ligue 1 side at Puskas Arena in Hungary.

As they sit bottom of Group F with one point from their opening three games, they'll certainly look to Ronaldo for inspiration considering the record-breaking moment he had on the very same pitch back when Portugal took on Hungary in their opening game.

Despite the game looking like it was heading for an uninspiring 0-0, Bayern Munich's Raphael Guerreiro opened the scoring in the 84th minute before the Portuguese icon doubled his side's lead just minutes later. It was Ronaldo's 10th goal in the European Championships as he became the tournament's all-time leading scorer, breaking Michel Platini's 37-year record.

The Frenchman had scored nine goals in the Euros, with all nine coming in Euro 1984 which France won by defeating Spain 2-0 in the final.

Ronaldo made it a brace with a stoppage-time penalty in an eventual 3-0 win for Portugal with his 11 goals coming across five Euro campaigns, spanning all the way back to Euro 2004 which Portugal hosted and reached the final, before losing in a huge upset to Greece.

The Manchester United scored three more goals in the tournament bringing his tally up to 14 goals and will surely be hoping to that figure in next year's competition.

Despite his age of 38, the striker has been in red-hot form for Al-Nassr and even ended as top scorer of his country for Euro 2024 qualifying with 10 goals. He's the only player to play in five Euros and score in five Euros which are two records under threat by the man himself next year.
