Jamie Carragher joked the ‘prawn sandwich brigade’ have arrived at Old Trafford ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby in a throwback to previous comments made by ex-United captain Roy Keane.

Erik ten Hag’s side host their cross-city rivals in a fiery derby clash with both sides needing to seal victory after similarly difficult periods at the start of the new season.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher is joined by Keane and ex-Man City star Micah Richards for Sky’s coverage of the match as the two fierce rivals meet for the first time this season.

Carragher sought to lighten the mood pre-match by sharing an image of the trio of pundits enjoying some food in their media box situated next to United’s famous Stretford End.

The 45-year-old poked fun at Keane’s previous comments by captioning his post on X – formerly Twitter – as: ‘Prawn sandwich brigade’.

Keane previously criticised United’s home supporters during a famous rant in 2000

Keane previously used the term when referencing the atmosphere inside United’s stadium prior to a Champions League group stage clash against Dinamo Kiev in 2000.

The Irishman at the time said:ย ‘At the end of the day they need to get behind the team. Away from home our fans are fantastic, I’d call them the hardcore fans.

‘But at home they have a few drinks and probably the prawn sandwiches, and they don’t realise what’s going on out on the pitch.

United manager Erik ten Hag will be banking on supporters inside Old Trafford to help his side beat City

‘I don’t think some of the people who come to Old Trafford can spell football, never mind understand it.

‘To win games by three and four every time – these people need fantasy football. They need to get in the real world.’

References have previously been made to Keane’s previous criticism with United themselves joking about the incident in their official shirt unveiling during the summer.

Keane was used to narrate the promotional video for United’s third kit strip and during one clip was pictured with a plate of prawn sandwiches that had been placed next to him.
