The German football association have today announced that former Bayern Munich manager, Julian Nagelsmann will succeed Hansi Flick as the new manager of the senior men’s national side.

On Friday, the 36-year-old put pen to paper on a deal that will keep him in charge until July 31, 2024 – which will see him take charge of the German side for the European Championships, which are set to finish on July 14, 2024.

It comes after Flick was sacked as the German National side’s head coach following a 4-1 drubbing by Japan, to finish up his tenure as the side’s head coach winning just four of his 17 games in charge.

Die Mannschaft have endured a difficult run of form since the 2022 World Cup, where they shockingly failed to make it out of the group stages following a 2-1 defeat by Japan and a 1-1 draw against Spain.

They roused a late 4-2 victory against Costa Rica in their final game of the group stages, but failed to qualify for the knockouts, finishing third behind Japan and Spain.

And since the start of the tournament in Qatar the 2014 world champions have won just three of the ten matches they have played, losing five of those outings.

Despite most recently defeating France 2-1 in a friendly during the September international break, they had previously endured three straight losses on the bounce, including a 4-1 hammering by Japan, a 2-0 loss to Colombia and a 1-0 defeat by Poland.

And the German football association will be hoping Nagelsmann can help turn their fortunes around ahead of the European Championships in Germany next year.

In anticipation of the tournament on home soil, Nagelsmann said he was hoping to make his side a ‘close-knit group’ by next year.

Speaking on his appointment, the German coach said: ‘We have a European Championship in our own country.

‘That’s something special – something that happens every few decades. I subordinate everything to the fact of having a great tournament in a great country. I have a great desire to to take on this challenge.

‘The appearance in Dortmund was the beginning. We will be a close-knit group next year.’

Nagelsmann has spent most of his managerial career working in the Bundesliga, rising through the ranks with Hoffenheim before moving to Leipzig in 2019.

He subsequently was appointed the head coach of Bayern Munich in 2021 where he achieved the most success, guiding Die Roten to the Bundesliga title in 2022 as well as the German Super Cup in 2022 and again in 2023.

The 36-year-old enjoyed a successful spell in charge at the Bavarian outfit, losing just 10 of his 84 games in charge at the club, before shockingly being sacked by his club while away on a skiing holiday earlier this year.

CEO Oliver Khan had admitted that the club ‘were forced to act following big fluctuations in their performances under Nagelsmann,’ with the ex-Bayern coach reportedly ripping up his severance package due from the club.

He was linked with the vacant Tottenham managers position this summer after Antonio Conte’s exit last season.

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf added on his appointment: ‘Next year’s European Championship is of enormous importance for football in Germany as a whole.

‘We are convinced that Julian Nagelsmann, as national coach, will ensure that the national team inspires its fans and that the EURO is also a sporting success. Julian Nagelsmann is an outstanding coach who approaches his new task with the highest level of motivation.

‘We will all now focus on the tournament next summer and support Julian Nagelsmann as best we can.’

Matthias Sammer had also reportedly been in the running for the position, but Rudi Voller, DFB sporting director claimed that Nagelsmann was always the ‘preferred choice.’

He said:  ‘Julian Nagelsmann was our preferred candidate as national coach when the search began.

‘He is not only an absolute football expert, but has already proven in all his positions – at a very young age for a head coach – that he can motivate and inspire a team and the entire environment.

‘His fire for football is noticeable and contagious – just like with his two assistant coaches Benjamin Glück and Sandro Wagner, whose great energy I was recently able to experience myself.

‘Julian Nagelsmann will be with his qualities and his personality will play a crucial role in ensuring that we will all experience a great European Championship in our own country in the summer.’
