Liverpool: Kylian Mbappe is ‘very interested’ says pundit
Former Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson has advised Jurgen Klopp to cash in on Mohamed Salah in January and make a move for Kylian Mbappe with the money they receive from Saudi Arabia. Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad attempted to test the Reds’ resolve with a monster £150million bid for Salah this summer and are expected to go back in for the Egyptian superstar once the transfer window opens up again in January.
There was talk of a potential £200m offer which would match PSG’s valuation for Mbappe. The Frenchman had previously tried to force a move away from Parc des Princes but has since entered into talks with the reigning Ligue 1 champions about a contract extension.
As a result, the 24-year-old will not leave on a free next summer as was expected. Mbappe’s can either sign the one-year extension option in his current deal to 2025 or put pen to paper on a new long-term contract.
Mbappe had been heavily linked to Real Madrid but that option appears to be off the table, at least for now, with manager Carlo Ancelotti recently ruling out the move entirely and affirming that his “squad is closed”. Klopp is also said to be a keen admirer of the player and would no doubt be interested in acquiring his services should he lose his star man to the Saudis.
Johnson doubts Mbappe would be interested but thinks Liverpool’s best bet of making it happen would be by selling Salah in January when they can receive the best deal possible for the 31-year-old. “I could see it happening. Mo’s not going to be able to always perform at the same levels that he has been doing over the past few years and if Liverpool can cash in for huge money for a 31-year-old, then it would be difficult for the club to turn down,” he told GGrecon.
“January could be the perfect time for Liverpool to cash in because if Mo’s interested in the move then they can make an enormous amount of money for a player that’s in his thirties.

“There will be major competition for Kylian from the biggest European clubs and Saudi clubs and I know we all praise Liverpool for their statistical approach to transfers, but sometimes you just need to try and go out and sign the best player.
“I don’t know if Kylian would be interested in going to Liverpool and for me personally, I can’t see him making the move to the Premier League at any point during his career.”
