Lionel Messi has been unveiled as the new co-owner of his former Argentina team-mate Sergio Aguero’s e-Sports team.

Ex-Manchester City striker Aguero launched KRU Esports in 2020 and they play the likes of FIFA, Rocket League, League of Legends and Valorant competitively with impressive results so far.

Messi has obviously been impressed with what he’s seen and has been convinced to join Aguero as a co-owner.

In a post to X – which was captioned ‘Now we are 2’ – Aguero said: ‘I am happy to share a club with Leo, of course now in a new stage and with other challenges.

‘It is an honour that he is part of KRU. He is the best footballer in history, and also a great friend.’

Messi appeared briefly in the video at the end, saying ‘let’s play’ after being introduced

The announcement video ended with Messi appearing on screen and saying: ‘Okay, let’s play’.

But he may now come up against long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo in another arena after the Portuguese star was invited to join an e-Sports team of his own in the wake of Messi’s announcement.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea quickly messaged his old team-mate, asking if he was interested in joining his Rebels Gaming team.

De Gea replied to Aguero’s announcement on X, saying: ‘I’m calling Cristiano’.

Messi is still firmly focused on soccer though. He was pictured back in training with Inter Miami on Wednesday after a whirlwind week since winning the Ballon d’Or.

The 36-year-old beat out the likes of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe to win a staggering eighth Ballon d’Or in Paris last week.

Joined at the ceremony by his wife, Antonella Roccuzzo, and their three sons, Mateo, Thiago and Ciro, Messi was honored after leading Argentina to a third World Cup triumph last year, as he scored seven goals – including two in the final.

He also scored 32 goals in 55 games across all competitions for PSG before moving to Inter Miami.

Despite leading the Herons to their first trophy in the Leagues Cup, he made just six league appearances due to injury and international duty with Argentina.

Having failed to qualify for the MLS play-offs, Messi and Co are due to play a friendly against New York City FC on Friday night.

He is then expected to play in Argentina’s pair of World Cup qualifiers next month against Brazil and Uruguay.
