Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp shown what he’s missing after £100m bid rejected

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was shown what he’s missing after Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes starred during the Magpies’ 8-0 Premier League thrashing of Sheffield United on Sunday. The German reportedly failed to get his hands on the player at the end of the summer transfer window after putting forward a £100million offer.

Guimaraes joined the north east giants in January 2022 after the club paid an initial £35m to prise him away from Lyon. Newcastle were in danger of dropping into the Championship when the 25-year-old arrived in England but ultimately turned their campaign around before enjoying an upturn in form last season as they secured their return to the Champions League courtesy of a fourth-place Premier League finish.

Guimaraes has been a key player for Eddie Howe, having already racked up 63 appearances for the team. And on Sunday, he was in superb form once again as Newcastle ran rampant at Bramall Lane.

Guimaraes controlled the match from the centre of the pitch and sprayed passes to the left and right as his side dominated possession. With Newcastle already out of sight with just over 20 minutes remaining, the Brazil international teed up Miguel Almiron for the sixth goal of the game before finding the back of the net himself for Newcastle’s seventh moments later.

According to Spanish publication AS, Liverpool tried to secure the services of Guimaraes in the final days of the summer transfer window after putting forward a whopping £100m bid. But the Magpies turned the fee down in favour of keeping hold of the talented star. And the player has continued to show his worth in a Newcastle shirt.

The Reds went after a whole host of midfielders in the summer, with Jordan Henderson and Fabinho both departing Anfield to move to Saudi Arabia. And Klopp ultimately brought in Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton, Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig and Wataru Endo from Stuttgart. But the 56-year-old could now have a smoother route to signing Guimaraes.

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle have agreed a new deal with Guimaraes to tie the player down until the end of the 2027/28 campaign. But the new contract will include a release clause in the region of £100m.

That means Klopp could well return to the table with the same bid he made in the summer in the near future. And the Magpies would have no option but to accept the offer. On the basis of this showing, Klopp would be wise to consider making such an offer again.
