Liverpool have their new Steven Gerrard as Carragher praises trio

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher believes the Reds have found a player in a similar mould to Steven Gerrard in Dominik Szoboszlai. The Hungarian has shone in his first few months since arriving at Anfield for £60million, scoring with a thumping Gerrard-esque drive in the Carabao Cup victory over Leicester last month.

Szoboszlai had already bagged his first goal for his new side in a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa in August. And the former RB Leipzig star looks set to score even more after reportedly impressing team-mates with his shooting ability.

Ex-defender Carragher points out that Liverpool have not had a player with Szoboszlai’s shooting range since Gerrard’s departure in 2015. He told the Liverpool Echo: “Szoboszlai looks brilliant. He looks almost like one of the best players and if he wasn’t playing in a game, you would really miss him.

“It’s not just his creativity or his shooting ability, it is his physical impact: the pace and power he has got in terms of the ground he covers and the challenges he is involved in. If he doesn’t have his best game with the ball, he is still having a huge impact.

“There was always that balance with Liverpool and the last midfield was always talked about as being hard-working with a little bit of talent, which I don’t think was right. They were very skilled players.

“But this new midfield is probably seen as more creative, but they have got great work ethic as well. They will be described as a completely different midfield, and they are slightly different from what we’ve had before, but is more exciting and flashy on the eye when you’re seeing Szoboszlai hitting shots from outside the box.

“We haven’t had that since Steven Gerrard, hence the comparisons. There is a little way for him to go to reach that level, but it looks like Liverpool have done really good business in that area.”

Carragher has been impressed by the new midfield signings at Anfield, with Jurgen Klopp overseeing a major overhaul in the position over the summer. The likes of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain all departed.

In came Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister. Gravenberch – signed from Bayern Munich – and academy graduate Curtis Jones – a rare survivor of the overhaul – have impressed Carragher.

“Gravenberch hasn’t played as much, you are looking at the potential and thinking it could be something really special there.

“You are seeing signs of that, the way he moves and glides past people. There is something there and, if Jurgen Klopp and his staff can make that into something good, we could have a really special player. Just looking at him, he looks like a footballer: the size, the physique. He reminds me a little bit of Patrick Vieira, that way he glides through with the ball. You can see signs of that.”

Asked about Jones, the former England international continued: “The role Curtis is playing is not being missed by people who understand the game and watch what he does. He is playing most games for Liverpool with Jurgen Klopp as the manager. Klopp has spent a lot of money on midfield players and he is still playing Curtis Jones every game, which shows how well he is doing.”
