Liverpool have made a formal request for the PGMOL to release the audio dialogue between referee Simon Hooper and the video assistant referees office at Stockley Park during Saturday’s controversial loss at Tottenham.

Luis Diaz had a goal ruled out for an offside after the VAR mistakenly believed the on-field decision had been to award the strike. The PGMOL admitted immediately after Spurs’ 2-1 win that ‘a significant human error occurred’ when the Colombian’s goal was ruled out.

It added: ’This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention.’

Liverpool vowed to explore the range of options available – without naming any possible approaches – in a statement on Sunday night, with the club saying it had a clear need for escalation and resolution of the controversial decision.

And it appears the first step is to ask the referee’s body PGMOL to give them access to the audio recording of the conversations that took place between on-pitch referee Hooper and the team in the VAR booth at Stockley Park.

Once Liverpool have assessed the dialogue, they will continue to weigh up their options on how they can receive a fair justice for the controversial and incorrect decision which cost them their unbeaten record at the start of this season.

Liverpool’s strongly-worded statement insisted that ‘unacceptable’ mistakes had been made in failing to award the goal.

‘Liverpool Football Club acknowledges PGMOL’s admission of their failures last night. It is clear that the correct application of the laws of the game did not occur, resulting in sporting integrity being undermined.

‘We fully accept the pressures that match officials work under but these pressures are supposed to be alleviated, not exacerbated, by the existence and implementation of VAR.

‘It is therefore unsatisfactory that sufficient time was not afforded to allow the correct decision to be made and that there was no subsequent intervention.

‘That such failings have already been categorised as “significant human error” is also unacceptable. Any and all outcomes should be established only by the review and with full transparency.’

The statement continued: ‘This is vital for the reliability of future decision making as it applies to all clubs with learnings being used to make improvements to processes in order to ensure this kind of situation cannot occur again.

‘In the meantime, we will explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution.’

Liverpool are also set to appeal Curtis Jones’ red card after a challenge on Yves Bissouma

The Reds are also aggrieved at the red card given to Curtis Jones at Spurs and have appealed that decision, with the midfielder set to serve a three-match ban if it was upheld. They believe the tackle was not reckless and did not warrant a sending off.

The Reds midfielder was punished for a tackle on Spurs’ Yves Bissouma, with still images showing Jones’ studs going into the shin of the Mali international.

Hooper consulted the on-field monitor and decided to send off Jones. He is set to miss the trip to Brighton on Sunday if the decision is upheld, with Diogo Jota also suspended following his red card at Tottenham.

Liverpool are also facing being without forward Cody Gakpo, who suffered a knee injury in north London on Saturday.
