Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp may have Arsenal chief Edu to thank for their latest transfer masterstroke after Dominik Szoboszlai put in another stellar display since his summer move from RB Leipzig. Liverpool were in desperate need of freshening things up in midfield this past summer, but nobody at the club would have expected things to go as smoothly as they have done to start the campaign so far.
Szoboszlai has been at the forefront of that success, endearing himself to the Liverpool fans with his silky footwork and forward-focused mindset. There were some questions over the fee Liverpool paid for the Hungarian as he had predominantly played on the right wing for Leipzig.
But Liverpool have benefited from giving the 23-year-old free reign in midfield and he lit up Anfield once again on Sunday in their 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest with two assists. Liverpool’s new No 8 already looks to be a crucial part of Klopp’s hopes for a title challenge this season.
And the Liverpool boss may have Arsenal to thank for having the ability to bring in Szoboszlai. The Hungary international has long been touted for a bright future in world football having made a name for himself in the Austrian Bundesliga.
Arsenal were one of the clubs considering a move for the highly-rated attacker in 2020 as a possible replacement for Mesut Ozil. But Edu reportedly had reservations on whether Szoboszlai would be able to make an immediate impact at the Emirates.
Those reservations ultimately led to Leipzig swooping in to sign Szoboszlai in 2021. He showed glimpses of his talents in the Bundesliga in a more attacking role.

But Klopp appears to have unlocked Szoboszlai’s true potential at the point of Liverpool’s midfield trio. The versatile midfielder will want to add more goals to his resume at Anfield, but time is on his side.
If his start on Merseyside is anything to go by, Liverpool arguably have someone they can build around in midfield for the next decade. Arsenal may be looking on in envy in a rare miss from transfer chief Edu, but Liverpool are now reaping the benefits.
And Klopp will be hoping Szoboszlai’s development will continue in the same trajectory for years to come.
