Luton Town vs Liverpool in pictures
The Luton Town media team trolled Darwin Nunez and couldn’t believe his horrendous miss at Kenilworth Road on Sunday evening. The Hatters managed to secure a point against Liverpool in a valiant performance by Rob Edwards’ side that frustrated the Reds and forced several tactical rethinks.
Luton looked like they were going to secure a historic victory when ex-Manchester United star Tahith Chong gave his side the lead in the 80th minute. The Dutch midfielder managed to steer his strike past Alisson to cap off an excellent counter-attack that saw the Hatters break with speed down the right.
However, Liverpool hit back in the 95th minute through second-half substitute Luis Diaz, who returned to Klopp’s matchday squad for the first time since his parents were kidnapped in Colombia last week. The winger rose highest at the back post to score a header that ensured Liverpool gained a late point against their newly-promoted opponents.
Luton were resilient against the constant pressure of Liverpool and managed to limit the Anfield outfit to very few clear-cut opportunities. But the Reds did miss a significant chance in the 71st minute when they should have taken the lead.
Don’t miss… Jurgen Klopp baffled after Liverpool draw with Luton as boss defends Nunez[LATEST]
After a cross to Mohamed Salah at the back post, the Egyptian misplaced his header and diverted the ball into the path of Nunez instead. The ex-Benfica star showed no composure from just a few yards out though and blazed his effort over the bar. The linesman ruled the chance as offside to spare his blushes in the short term, though replays showed that the goal would likely have been given.
Luton’s official X (Twitter) account tweeted: “What a miss from Darwin Nunez!” alongside an emoji of a person’s head exploding, to truly highlight how shocking the miss was.

Nunez saw several speculative efforts blaze over the bar throughout the course of 90 minutes, in contrast to his sensational goal against Bournemouth in midweek. Speaking about his performance, Klopp said: “It’s one of these days that are completely normal. Once or twice I saw a flag coming up so it would not have been a goal so it’s not important.
“The one ball that Mo (Salah) squares with the header, I think he already was upset with himself with a big chance. We had other moments, but when he had more than 50 per cent of the shots it showed that he was really involved in everything.”
