Luis Rubiales’ mum ‘locks herself in a church and declares hunger strike’

‘This is unacceptable’ – Alexia Putellas after Luis Rubiales refuses to resign

The mother of Spanish football chief Luis Rubiales has locked herself in a church and declared a hunger strike, according to reports in Spain. Rubiales has been suspended by FIFA for kissing football star Jenni Hermoso after the Women’s World Cup final.

FIFA have suspended Rubiales from football-related activities for 90 days after he refused to step down from his role as president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation. The action includes a ban on attempting to contact Hermoso, who claims that she did not consent to the post-match kiss.

Rubiales told a different story during a heated press conference last week, when he refused to resign and defended his actions. Now, the 46-year-old’s mother, Angeles Bejar, has taken drastic action.

Locking herself in the Divina Pastora church in Motril, Spain, Bejar has declared a hunger strike until a solution is found to the ‘inhumane’ treatment directed at her son.

She insisted to Spanish news agency EFE that Rubiales ‘is incapable of hurting anyone’, calling on Hermoso to ‘tell the truth’ and ‘maintain the version she had at the beginning of the events’.

Bejar is believed to have stayed inside the church, along with her sister, on Monday morning. The lock-in and hunger strike is set to continue ‘indefinitely, day and night’ until ‘justice’ is done.

Rubiales repeatedly screams ‘I will not resign’ as press conference boils over[NEWS]

In the aftermath of Spain’s World Cup win, Rubiales was under intense pressure to step down from his role as RFEF president, which he has held since 2018. The managers of Spain’s men’s and women’s teams, Jorge Vilda and Luis de la Fuente, attended the Extraordinary General Assembly called last week.

During a fiery speech, which most expected to include Rubiales’ resignation, the Spanish football chief repeatedly shouted ‘I will not resign’ and publicly offered Vilda four more years in charge of Spain’s World Cup-winning side.

Vilda’s coaching staff resigned en masse over the weekend, with the coach going on to label Rubiales’ behaviour ‘inappropriate’. “The events that have taken place since Spain won the Women’s World Cup for the first time in its history have been a real nonsense and have generated an unprecedented situation, tarnishing a deserved triumph of our players and our country,” he told Marca.

“I deeply regret that the victory of Spanish women’s football has been harmed by the inappropriate behaviour that our until now president, Luis Rubiales, has carried out and that he himself has acknowledged.

“There is no doubt that it is unacceptable and does not reflect at all the principles and values that I defend in my life, in sport in general and in football in particular.”
