Lyon boss left bloodied as team bus ambushed with crisis meeting planned

Newcastle have mounting problems after Dortmund defeat | Football Digest

Lyon’s team bus was reportedly targeted with rocks thrown as the squad travelled to face Marseille in Ligue 1 on Sunday. Head coach Fabio Grosso could be seen holding his face, which was left bloodied after shards of glass cut it, when stepping off before the Italian was bandaged up after the distressing scenes in France.

Ligue 1 have announced they have opened a crisis unit in Marseille after incidents around the stadium and they are set to make a decision over whether the game will go ahead.

French outlet Le Parisian have claimed that stones were hurled at the bus which was carrying players and coaches to the Stade Velodrome ahead of the ‘Olympico’ clash.

The rocks were said to have perforated the glass and the broken shards caused a facial injury to Grosso. Lyon assistant Raffaele Longo was also hit in the eye by shards of glass as the windows on the right side of the bus were smashed.

No comment has yet been made by Lyon or the LFP on the incident, while club owner John Textor is currently part of the meeting in their dressing room over whether the game should be played.

Grosso received emergency medical treatment upon his arrival to Marseille’s stadium and could later be seen with a bandage over his head, with their preparations severely disrupted and all those involved understandably fearful for their safety after such a terrifying ordeal.

It is not the first time that such an incident has occurred, as their bus was smashed by Marseille ultras in 2019. Club president Jean-Michel Aulas, who was on board at the time but since resigned in May, threatened to pull out of the game as windows had been broken on their journey to their rivals.

After the incident, Aulas said: “Not again! We ran into an ambush! If it continues like this, we won’t be playing.”
