Man City are as big as Man Utd after decade of dominance claims Blues icon

Manchester City icon Shaun Wright-Phillips insists his former club are just as big as Manchester United are, particularly after winning the Treble.

United are the most successful club in English football history and have long since been recognised as one of the 'biggest' teams in the world. But Wright-Phillips, who played for City on two occasions, reckons the Sky Blues are now on a par with their neighbours following a decade of superiority.

"Man United have been a very big team for a very long time, you can't really brush away what they've achieved in the past. But everything in the present is all blue, it's all Man City," Wright-Phillips said speaking exclusively to Daily Star Sport, via Betway Sports Betting.

"One thing people said was City had never won the Champions League, then the year they win it they match Man United by winning the Treble – the second team to do it in England. Around the world globally they'll be a few more Man United fans, but City are catching them fast.

"I've been on a few trips with the club in recent years and the fanbase is growing so quickly," he added. "I think the clubs are around about the same now [in terms of size]."

City meet United on Sunday in the first meeting between the two sides since the FA Cup final in June. Ilkay Gundogan netted twice on his final appearance for the Citizens that day to cancel out Bruno Fernandes' strike and seal one third of City's historic Treble.

The club are still a way behind United in terms of honours, but however you judge the overtly-subjective size of a particular football team, there's little denying the seismic shift in reputation City have undergone in the last 15 years.

TNT is the only place you can watch all the action from the Champions League this year. You can see every game from the group stage right through to the final as Manchester City look to defend their crown as the newest kings of the World's biggest and best football tournament.

Wright-Phillips began his career at City, joining the club's academy as a teenager in 1999. He made just shy of 200 appearances for the team before being snapped by recently-minted Chelsea in 2005.

In three years at Stamford Bridge Wright-Phillips landed his first pieces of major silverware, winning the Premier League in 2006 and the FA Cup and League Cup in 2007, before moving back to City in 2008. He racked up another 94 appearances for the club, and pocketed another FA Cup winner's medal, before moving on to QPR in 2011.

The former England international, who earned 36 caps for his country, wrapped his career up in the US, initially with the New York Red Bulls and later with Phoenix Rising. He hung up his boots in 2017.
