Man Utd and Liverpool transfer fight for Malen ‘depends on Sancho future’

Man Utd played very poorly in away defeat at Newcastle

Manchester United may reportedly get the opportunity to join the race to sign Borussia Dortmund star Donyell Malen. Liverpool hold a strong interest in the versatile forward and his pursuit is said to have been given the seal of approval by Jurgen Klopp, though the Reds may now face a fight for his signature from their biggest rivals.

United are keen to bolster their forward ranks in the winter window, with Erik ten Hag not satisfied with his options at present. Several options are being explored by the Red Devils, with the higher powers at the club waiting for the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe before settling on their top target in that department.

However, Dortmund could make the decision-making process at Old Trafford significantly simpler. According to Football Transfers, United will be offered the chance to sign Malen in January if they part ways with Jadon Sancho.

The England international is expected to leave the Theatre of Dreams in January following his public fallout with Ten Hag, and Dortmund remain keen to re-sign the winger and help him get his career back on track in familiar surroundings.

Thus, there is every chance that a swap deal is negotiated between Dortmund and United which will see Malen finally make the move to the Premier League. The Netherlands international made an agency switch to SEG earlier this season, who have close ties with United.

Ten Hag, Sofyan Amrabat and Rasmus Hojlund are almost among their clients list, and the links between SEG and United have been questioned by some due to the power that the agency potentially wields.

With reports emerging in Italy that Sancho has fallen down Juventus’ list of winger targets, Dortmund could be left with a free run at their former winger – especially as the England international is not willing to entertain likely offers from the Middle East.

Malen, who spent time at Arsenal as a teenager, could be the ideal replacement for the 23-year-old given that he can play on both wings and also through the middle, with his willingness to run in behind and get to the by-line likely to play into the strengths of Hojlund.

However, a significant bid from Liverpool could throw a curveball into negotiations. The Reds are looking to bring in a long-term successor for Mohamed Salah who is also capable of leading the line at Anfield – and they have landed on Malen as the ideal candidate for that role.
