Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag told how he can save his job at Old Trafford

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been urged to “show more personality” in order to save his job. Former Newcastle boss Alan Pardew claims the Dutchman must make a change to his persona in order to turn things around at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag saw his United side crash out of the Champions League on Tuesday. A 1-0 home defeat to Bayern Munich was enough to send the Red Devils out of Europe altogether, with only the Premier League and FA Cup to play for.

Ten Hag has had to stand firm amid speculation over his own future as well as the harmony among the players. He insists all is good in the dressing room despite losing 12 of the 24 games they have played in all competitions this season.

But Pardew wants to see the 53-year-old adopt a different strategy when speaking to the media. He thinks more honesty would keep the fans on his side.

Pardew told talkSPORT: “Well in my view, I think he’s been fortunate to still be there with some of the performances that they’ve had. I also want to call him out a little bit to show a bit more personality.

“I think he’s playing the game a little bit in terms of being restricted in what he’s saying. It’s a similar tone, ‘We’re all together in this, there’s no problems’, I think Man United fans want to see a bit of personality from him, a little bit more.

“Like, ‘Actually, we’ve been rubbish and we need to turn it on tonight.’ I’d like him to sort of come out of that little bit, and I think if he’s being like that in the dressing room and being very matter of fact, I think that’s going to be a bigger problem for them.”

Pardew says Ten Hag’s press conferences and interviews often come across as “orchestrated” and reckons he and the team would benefit from him opening up more. He added: “I’m not here with my League Manager’s Association manager’s hat on looking to get rid of managers but you’re saying to me, ‘What should he do?’ In my view, offer us a bit more of your personality.

“Come out and be a little bit more… not so much animated, but connect a little bit more. He’s been a bit matter of fact, like, ‘We’re all in it, everybody’s happy, let’s get [Scott] McTominay on, there’s team spirit in the dressing room, make sure you touch on that.’

“It all seems orchestrated, the whole message coming out of Man United and if I was PR at Man United with the experience I’ve got, I’d say, ‘Come on guys, let’s get out there!’ Put yourself on the line a little bit rather than sort of hiding behind a kind of corporate talk if you know what I mean.”
