Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes slammed over ‘pathetic’ treatment of youngster

Micah Richards has labelled Bruno Fernandes “embarrassing” after he berated Manchester United youngster Facundo Pellistri in the 2-0 defeat to Tottenham. The Red Devils skipper has seen his captaincy credentials once again thrown into question in recent days after he was handed the armband on a permanent basis by Erik ten Hag at the start of the campaign.

Richards was disgusted by the incident after Fernandes let rip at Pellistri as opposed to encouraging the Uruguayan.

He believes Fernandes needs to adjust the emotional side of his game if he is to be a successful skipper at Old Trafford.

“It’s getting embarrassing now,” Richards said on the The Rest Is Football podcast.

“The young lad Pellistri comes on. Fernandes is trying to get his team playing and I totally understand he’s frustrated.

“Pellistri made a run, Fernandes didn’t see him and [so] he made a different run but because he wasn’t where [Fernandes] wanted him to be, he’s going off at Pellestri.

“It’s every time. I saw an interview with him the other day and he said he needs to be emotional when he performs because it makes him play better.

“But I feel like his body language on the pitch is disturbing the rest of the team and it’s just not a good look at all. It’s pathetic at times.”

Pellistri has struggled for opportunities at United but he has started to look bright from the bench after impressing at the back end of last season.

Sheffield United are showing loan interest but he could well remain with the Red Devils where he could prove to be an asset moving forward.

Pundit Andy Townsend has also questioned the decision to hand Fernandes the captaincy in the past few days and he believes there could be another motive behind the decision.

He said on talkSPORT: “They make people captain like they want them to stay. They want to keep them there.

“Give them the captaincy, I see that quite a lot.

“I agree with Simon, I don’t think he is captain material.”

Before adding: “I see people given an armband not necessarily because they are the right man for the job but because they’re the top man or the biggest asset.”

Fernandes replaced Harry Maguire as captain, stepping up from his previous role as vice-captain.

He endured a frustrating afternoon against Tottenham as he missed a glorious chance to open the scoring before Spurs made United pay.
