Man Utd have ‘outside chance’ of Mason Mount injury boost for Brighton clash

Mikel Arteta reviews the Manchester United game

Manchester United star Mason Mount reportedly has an ‘outside chance’ of featuring in Brighton’s visit to Old Trafford next weekend in a major boost for Erik ten Hag. Mount has missed United’s last two Premier League fixtures through injury.

The playmaker has also been absent for England’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine and the friendly with Scotland. However, United supposedly hope to see the former Chelsea star return this month.

Mount was part of a £183millon summer spending spree by the Old Trafford outfit, with particular attention paid to United’s midfield. Mount was the club’s first signing of the recently-closed transfer window and he was followed by loanee Sofyan Amrabat on deadline day.

But the 24-year-old soon suffered a setback in United’s 2-0 defeat by Tottenham in August. He hobbled off late in the game, with Ten Hag fearing a potentially lengthy absence.

The Athletic report that Mount could be back later this month, though. United are targeting a return for the club’s Champions League group stage fixture against German champions Bayern a week on Wednesday (September 20).

Mount supposedly has an ‘outside chance’ of being in the United squad for Brighton’s visit to Old Trafford next Saturday. But if he does not, that will leave Ten Hag with an issue selecting a midfield. Sofyan Amrabat is also reported to have picked up an injury on international duty.

Mount has faced criticism for his first two displays in a United shirt. However, Ten Hag has backed the England ace to thrive in a new deeper position alongside Casemiro.

“Christian Eriksen came in last season and for the first time in his life he played in a deeper role. That was the ambition for Christian and it is also the ambition for Mason. So he wants to be more multi-functional, and that is the way I see football,” Ten Hag said in August.

“He can do it. Already we have seen it in pre-season. Definitely we have to work on many facts of our game, but also that fact about midfield co-operation and how we have to set it. I’m sure we will get it, but it is not coming overnight.

“There is a process that we have to go through, but I’m sure he has the game intelligence, he has the technical abilities, he also has good vision on the ball.

“He knows what to do with the ball. He has the dynamics, don’t forget that, and he has the mentality. All the ingredients are there to do it.”
