Scott McTominay rescued all three points for Manchester United with a dramatic brace in stoppage time to complete a stunning turnaround and defeat Brentford 2-1. The Scotland international notched twice in the dying embers to slightly relieve the pressure on Erik ten Hag after Mathias Jensen’s opener. Here, Express Sport takes a look at the major talking points from the game, including a disappointing trio.
McTominay the hero
McTominay made himself the hero at Old Trafford after being thrust late into the action. His two goals rescued Ten Hag and his side who were on the brink of three consecutive league defeats at home for the first time since the 1970s.
The first was made by Alejandro Garnacho, who jinked past two defenders before some ping-pong in the box ended when McTominay was able to fire home on the rebound.
Then in the 97th minute, Old Trafford erupted when a long ball was latched onto by Harry Maguire and his header found McTominay who nodded past the goalkeeper to seal a dramatic late turnaround.

Makeshift back four
Ten Hag confirmed that Raphael Varane missed the game through a small issue, adding to their injury crisis that forced the Dutchman to start a back four of Diogo Dalot, Maguire, Jonny Evans and Lindelof against Brentford. Lindelof was trialled at left-back, as Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and on-loan Sergio Reguilon all missed out through injury.
As a group, they struggled to get the better of Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa up front. The strike partnership were able to get in behind and hold up play well as the pacey forwards were a difficult task for veterans Maguire and Evans especially.
Ten Hag will be desperate for the returns of his first-choice back four as United have conceded 12 goals from eight Premier League games and if the Dutchman is to dispel the pressure surrounding his position, the defence will need to improve.

Trio let Ten Hag down
Ten Hag will be disappointed with three of his United starters; Casemiro, Onana and Mason Mount, after their performances against Brentford.
Casemiro was hooked at half-time after a disastrous opening 45 minutes, having carelessly given the ball away under very little pressure, which allowed Brentford to break and ended up with Jensen scoring the game’s opening goal.
That strike could have further been prevented, however, as Onana got a hand to the shot but did not get a strong enough palm to stop it from finding the back of the net.
Mount was first deployed as a number ten and then out wide in the second half as Ten Hag continues to attempt to get the best out of the former Chelsea star, but another dispirited performance will leave the Dutchman scratching his head and pondering whether Mount should feature after the international break.
Rashford sub reaction
Ten Hag once again brought Marcus Rashford off despite chasing the game, as last season’s top scorer was replaced by Garnacho. A decision that once would have prompted fierce backlash from the Old Trafford faithful, instead had a different response.
The United fans cheered as Rashford’s was replaced, posting further questions over the England man’s place in the team as Garnacho provided the spark for McTominay’s first goal.

Mounting defensive injuries
Lindelof was replaced by Martial with 20 minutes remaining but indicated that he may have picked up an injury, as he headed directly down the tunnel as opposed to taking his place on the bench.
Players who opt against sitting on the bench often receive immediate treatment by the medical staff, an issue for the Sweden international would only further add to Ten Hag’s headache.
Lindelof could well join Lisandro Martinez, Varane, Shaw, Reguilon, Malacia and Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the treatment table, though the hope will be that his issue is not serious enough to keep him out for United’s next match – away to Sheffield United after the international break.
