Man Utd staff angry with Marcus Rashford were warned by club icon a year ago

Marcus Rashford 'rejected' Man Utd captaincy despite Bruno Fernandes admission

Manchester United staff were said to be angry with Marcus Rashford at the weekend as the Red Devils suffered their fourth Premier League defeat of the season at the hands of Crystal Palace. But they were warned about the winger’s shortcomings a year ago by club icon Louis Saha.

United were in dismal form once again at Old Trafford when Palace visited and were unable to find a route to goal as Eagles defender Joachim Andersen scored the only goal of the game midway through the first half.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United staff were despairing at Rashford’s use of the ball, with manager Erik ten Hag even spotted pulling the 25-year-old to one side before the interval in an attempt to get more from the ace.

Rashford has just one goal and one assist to his name in the Premier League this season, although he did set-up Rasmus Hojlund’s opening goal against Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday night as the Red Devils lost 3-2.

And Saha may be having a ‘told you so’ moment. “Rashford is an amazing player,” the former striker told William Hill at the start of the year. “What I like about him is he’s very focused, he’s not in the media for the wrong reasons.

“But sometimes it’s about his emotions. He does have emotion within himself, but he sometimes doesn’t express it and so people get frustrated. He works hard, but he reminds me a little bit of Nani. Nani was even more talented than Cristiano Ronaldo in some ways – in terms of his physical qualities. He could run all day, physically he was so strong, skilful as well.

“But he was not deadly. He was not as deadly as Cristiano, who was very focused, knew how to score and when to score. And sometimes that’s how I feel Marcus is, he’s in between. He has this potential where he can give a lot to the team, defend for the team, but he could be more selfish.

“Nani was an immense talent for me, I loved the guy, but people were frustrated because he couldn’t find the right moment to make the difference, he’d miss an opportunity that he shouldn’t miss, and sometimes that’s what I see in Marcus. But Marcus started out at United very young and was asked to be the superstar and the one to save the club, so the education and the way he has had to protect himself since then has been difficult for him.”
