Man Utd target rubs salt in Erik ten Hag’s wounds after boss broke own rule

Erik ten Hag reviews the Crystal Palace game

Manchester United’s summer transfer target Ollie Watkins has rubbed salt in the wounds of Erik ten Hag after hitting form for Aston Villa. According to the Athletic Ten Hag set out for a ‘no risk’ transfer policy this summer, but failed to capture his initial targets.

United headed into the summer transfer window hoping to sign Harry Kane to booster their forward line. Aston Villa star Watkins was an alternative United target after finishing the season with 15 Premier League goals.

However, with two years left on his contract Villa were reluctant to allow their star to leave. Club legend Stan Collymore jokingly quoted £100million plus Marcus Rashford for Watkins after his stellar finish to the season.

Instead, United splashed out £72million on Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund who is yet to score in the Premier League. Hojlund failed to find the net again this weekend while leading the line during their 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford to Crystal Palace.

Meanwhile, Watkins is in the form of his life scoring a hat-trick as Villa thrashed Brighton 6-1 on Saturday. The 27-year-old could also be called up to play for England as Gareth Southgate was at Villa Park to keep watch over the starlet.

The former Brentford and Exeter City forward is rumoured to be on the verge of extending his contract with Villa, to put any suitors off this January. He was asked about the contract negotiations after the Brighton game.

He told TNT Sports: “I just try and let my football do the talking. My goal is to score goals and help the team win. What happens off the pitch is separate.”

Ten Hag will be hoping that Hojlund can improve his form as he targets adding a defender to his squad. According to reports United want to sign a new centre-back when the January transfer window opens.
