Mason Greenwood receives public support from Man Utd player for first time

Mason Greenwood has received a message of support from one of his former Manchester United team-mates as he made his Getafe debut.

Following his loan move to Spain, Greenwood came off the bench during the 3-2 victory over Osasuna. It was the 21-year-old's first competitive appearance in 20 months, with the last coming for United back in January 2022.

Greenwood was introduced in place of Juanmi Latasa in the 77th minute with the scoreline at 2-2 and the result in the balance after hosts Getafe had led twice in the game. He then helped win a corner from which Nemanja Maksimovic put them ahead with four minutes of regulation time left.

United players have largely remained quiet on Greenwood but youngster Amad Diallo has broken the squad’s silence. Amad posted a video on his Instagram story of the moment Greenwood came on. The clip was captioned with two love heart and cupped hand emojis.

United, as a club, have made few public comments about Greenwood, who saw charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault against him dropped earlier this year. Before the transfer deadline, United confirmed he would be leaving the club, although the fact he has only joined Getafe on loan means the Old Trafford door isn’t completely closed on him.

The club said in a statement: “Manchester United has concluded its internal investigation into the allegations made against Mason Greenwood. Our process commenced in February 2023, following all charges against Mason being dropped.

“Throughout, we have taken into account the wishes, rights and perspective of the alleged victim along with the club’s standards and values, and sought to collate as much information and context as possible.

“This has required us to proceed with sensitivity and care to obtain evidence not in the public domain, including from those with direct knowledge of the case.

“Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged. That said, as Mason publicly acknowledges today, he has made mistakes which he is taking responsibility for.

“All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”
