Israeli police reportedly seized molotov cocktails and arrested 90 fans during the Tel Aviv derby riots.

Hapoel Tel Aviv faced fierce rivals Maccabi Tel Aviv at the Bloomfield Stadium on Tuesday night. Historic bitterness between the two clubs saw a heavy-handed approach employed by police towards supporters in the build up to the fixture.

But tensions spilled over outside the ground as police clashed with Maccabi fans and fans stormed the stadium. The result was fans from both sides being arrested, while 120 flares, 35 smoke grenades, four firework guns and two molotov cocktails were confiscated.

Trouble brewed as early as Monday night when footage emerged on social media, appearing to show Hapoel ultras searching the streets for Maccabi fans while chanting. Before kick-off, ordinary fans of Maccabi looking to enter the stadium were barricaded into a tight space with a heavy police presence involved.

As the atmosphere became more hostile, footage showed police resorting to more aggression as riot officers on horseback charged through crowds of Hapoel fans gathered outside the stadium. Social media clips showed people yelling: “There are kids here!” while shielding their children, but to no avail.

Hapoel ultras called on fans to leave the stadium and boycott the match in response to the police’s aggression. Kick-off was delayed, with the official Maccabi Twitter account tweeting: “After discussions with the police and security representatives, the game time was postponed at the request of the club's CEO Ben Mansford.

“Fans are asked to be patient even when entering the stands. We do our best to ensure that the entry and security arrangements go as planned.”

The game eventually began as furious fans voiced their grievances on social media. "After what we've been through, I want a minimum of 3-0 here,” one Maccabi fan tweeted.

And the Maccabi faithful got their wish as they were treated to a dominant display over their rivals. Maccabi took the lead after 22 minutes thanks to Dor Peretz, before scoring two more before the half-time interval.
