Pep Guardiola applauds Manchester City's mentality following Newcastle victory
Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes was an unhappy camper following the reaction to his team’s defeat against Manchester City on Saturday. The Brazilian, who has come to be recognised as the talisman of the Magpies’ promising new era, struck out at fans with ‘short, stupid memories’ in a since-deleted social media post.
Guimaraes struggled to influence the game at the Etihad Stadium, where Newcastle managed just one shot on target in their 1-0 defeat, with Julian Alvarez scoring a superb winner for the hosts.
Afterwards, one fan account posted a picture of Guimaraes, along with team-mates Dan Burn, Joelinton and Miguel Almiron with the caption: “Is it too early in the season to start focusing blame on individual players?”
Guimaraes responded with a vomiting emoji, subsequently adding: “Support in the best moment is easy. Short, stupid memories you all have.

“Is this serious? We are in Champions League football, we lost against maybe one of the best teams in the world and we have a big win and lost one game! Look what we have done for the team in one year and a half.”
Newcastle supporters may not wish to drive Guimaraes towards a potential transfer exit, given the number of top teams chasing his signature. The 25-year-old admitted that a conversation with La Liga giants Real Madrid took place last summer.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Barcelona manager Xavi are also rumoured to be admirers of Guimaraes, who is contracted to Newcastle until 2026 but admitted during the summer that a shred of ‘doubt’ remains over his club future.
When asked about the prospect of a new deal, he responded: “There is no news. I want to stay, but the doubt is ongoing. So, let’s see.” Guimaraes is the Magpies’ biggest earner on a reported £140,000 a week.
The midfield general has been a smash hit since signing from Lyon last January in a £40million deal. Newcastle would at least turn a massive profit if they sold him on, even if manager Eddie Howe naturally has no plans to do so.
Guimaraes’ comments about ‘short memories’ also pertains to Newcastle’s 5-1 thrashing of Aston Villa, which delighted fans at St James’ Park on the opening weekend of the campaign.
