Newcastle have been dumped out of the Champions League following their heartbreakingly 2-1 defeat to AC Milan.

Joelinton's first-half wondergoal had St James' Park rocking and dreaming of a place in the last 16, but second-half strikes from ex-Chelsea man Christian Pulisic and Samuel Chukwueze turned the game on its head and sealed a dramatic victory for the visitors.

The Magpies headed into the clash knowing that they needed to beat Milan and PSG to drop points in Germany for them to finish second – behind Dortmund who had already secured top spot in the group – to make the knockout rounds, but failed to get the job done on an agonising evening's football in the north east.

Few fans gave Eddie Howe's side much of a chance after a last-minute Kylian Mbappe penalty denied them a desperately needed win against PSG last month, but they battled right to the end in what has proven to be one heck of an entertaining return to Champions League football after 20 years away.

The defeat means they've finished rock bottom of the group, and as such, have missed out on a place in the Europa League. That honour will go to Milan, who leapfrogged Newcastle into third but failed to catch PSG due to their inferior head-to-head record against the Ligue 1 club.

The defeat was Newcastle's third on the trot, following on from their 4-1 hammering at Tottenham over the weekend and their 3-0 defeat to Everton on Thursday.
