Newcastle star Dan Burn admits he was fuming with Bruno Guimaraes after PSG win

Newcastle defender Dan Burn admits he was fuming with Bruno Guimaraes ahead of his side’s second goal against Paris Saint-Germain. Burn doubled his team’s lead on a memorable Champions League night for the Magpies on Wednesday.

Newcastle welcomed Kylian Mbappe and his superstar team-mates for their first home match in Europe’s elite club competition for 20 years. The atmosphere was exhilarating before the match and Eddie Howe’s players put on a show.

Newcastle took the lead through Miguel Almiron in the 17th minute. They were in dreamland six minutes before half-time when Burn’s back-post header was given following a lengthy VAR check.

But the left-back has revealed he was not happy with Guimaraes moments before he scored. The Brazilian midfielder shot from a tight angle when Burn felt he should have sent in a cross.

PSG were unable to clear properly after a Gianluigi Donnarumma save and Guimaraes was given a second bite at the cherry. This time he did pick out Burn at the back post and the giant defender made no mistake.

Asked about his goal, Burn told TNT Sports: “Yeah amazing. Obviously, when the offside flag went up I was absolutely gutted. And then you can see it’s delaying, it’s delaying, it’s delaying.

“I’m not going to lie I was so angry with Bruno for shooting the first one, because we always say ‘back post’. And then it comes back and as soon as it got hung I just thought ‘I’m going for it’.”

Goals from Sean Longstaff and Fabian Schar in the second half rounded off a perfect night for Newcastle. Burn knew the team had to improve from their goalless draw against AC Milan last time out and they did just that.

On the result, he said: “Yeah crazy. It hasn’t really sunk in to be honest, I’m a bit speechless.

“We said that we wanted to entertain the crowd. I know that away [to AC Milan] we got a bit of a battering but I knew that when we got a team at home, with the crowd behind us, it was electric and we did well.

“We knew PSG were not going to change the way they play. They’re obviously one of the best teams in the world but we’ve said we are going to go out and attack every game.

“The times we did play high up the pitch we had the crowd pushing us on, we created chances, and even the last goal came from pressing it.”
