Olympiacos clash suspended as players accidentally tear gased after VAR decision

Greek giants Olympiacos had their clash with Volos suspended with minutes left on the clock after police attempted to tear gas fans.

Ayoub El Kaabi thought he had handed the Greek giants the win in the 88th minute – when he nodded home from a free-kick. However, a VAR check revealed that Youssef El-Arabi's heel had strayed a whisker offside.

El-Arabi had won the initial header, before El Kabbi turned the ball into the back of the net. It was the second time in the game Olympiacos had a goal chalked off, and they were left furious at the officials.

Fans in the away end smashed seats, and threatened to make their way onto the pitch to confront the referee. Greek police attempted to calm the fans, but they were forced to deploy tear gas to keep the fans way from the pitch.

However, the players were caught in the crossfire, and the referee was left with no option but to take players away from the scenes as they struggled to breath. Images then emerged of the players watering down their eyes in the dressing room.

Volos' president, Achilleas Beos, slammed the police for their use of tear gas – he said, via Sport24: "We have to dwell on this image which is a shame, where of course the Greek police also have a lot of responsibility.

"This is not a way and a reason to repel the fans with tear gas, this was also the reason why at least 10 players of both Olympiakos and Volos fell down.

"They could not breathe. Two of us and the goalkeeper couldn't breathe, they went to the doctor's office and we put them on oxygen."

After over an hour with no action, the referee brought the two sides back out onto the pitch to finish the clash – which ended 2-2.

However, the trouble wasn't over outside of the Panthessaliko Stadium, and fans of the two sides continued to clash. Police were again forced to use tear gas to disperse the crowds.
